Read 180 is designed for students who are reading one or more years below grade level and serves as a Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention solution in grades 3 - 12. Read 180 focuses on enhancing students’ foundational literacy, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills to achieve grade-level reading proficiency.

Read 180 is built on 25 years of research and, in over 90 efficacy studies, has been proven effective for raising reading achievement for striving readers with diverse backgrounds. Read 180 has been validated by numerous independent studies published in academic peer-reviewed journals, reports issued by national education organizations, and external evaluation sites. Read 180 has been given an ESSA Rating of Strong, the highest rating.

Read 180 accelerates students’ reading to achieve grade-level proficiency by:

  • Developing foundational literacy skills through systematic and explicit instruction on letter sounds, word parts, and syllables
  • Deepening academic and content-area vocabulary words
  • Providing multiple fluency practices with feedback on accuracy, pacing, and prosody
  • Expanding the content knowledge that helps anchor students’ understanding of text
  • Developing comprehension and meaning making through critical thinking and the ability to view and articulate important issues from multiple perspectives

Read 180 leverages adaptive technology to personalize instruction and practice for students and provides educators with curriculum for Whole- and Small-Group learning, along with powerful data for differentiation. Read 180 also includes age-appropriate independent reading texts at multiple reading levels. Read 180 is available in three stages to ensure that all students are working with content that is engaging and age-appropriate: Stage A (Grades 3–5), Stage B (Grades 6–8), and Stage C (Grades 9–12).

The intervention exhibits strengths in teaching students a routine they can use to decode multisyllabic words and embedding spelling instruction in the lesson. Teachers will need to supplement to identify the level of students’ word-reading skills.

Teachers will need to supplement consistently to provide students with opportunities to ask and answer different types of questions to better understand the text, use text structure to generate gist statements, and monitor their comprehension as they read.
