REWARDS® is a research-validated, strategic reading and writing intervention suite designed to teach students in grades 4–12 flexible strategies for decoding long words and to increase their oral and silent reading fluency. Using a highly generalizable and effective strategy for decoding multisyllabic words, REWARDS improves word attack and fluency skills and increases automaticity, which results in improved comprehension of information and content-area texts. The program supports any core curriculum and offers flexible implementation options using a strategic blend of print and online materials.

REWARDS® is a research-validated, strategic reading and writing intervention suite designed to teach students in grades 4–12 flexible strategies for decoding long words and to increase their oral and silent reading fluency. Using a highly generalizable and effective strategy for decoding multisyllabic words, REWARDS improves word attack and fluency skills and increases automaticity, which results in improved comprehension of information and content-area texts. The program supports any core curriculum and offers flexible implementation options using a strategic blend of print and online materials. Its engaging, fast-paced instructional model utilizes the tenets of quality direct instruction and gradual release methodology, leading to students’ independent use of reading and writing strategies.


REWARDS Intermediate and Secondary (grades 4–12) supports fluency, multisyllabic word reading, and academic vocabulary.


REWARDS Plus Social Studies and Science (grades 6–12) focuses on applying reading strategies to social studies and science passages.


REWARDS Writing: Sentence Refinement (grades 5–12) teaches essential writing skills including sharpening word choice, sentence refinement, and editing paragraphs.
 

The ultimate goals of the REWARDS series are to increase fluency rates, deepen comprehension of informational and content-area texts, and increase precision in sentence writing.

Recommendation 1: Decoding Multisyllabic Words

The Rewards materials partially align with this recommendation of the IES Practice Guide. The intervention demonstrated evidence of identifying the level of students’ word-reading skills and teaching students a routine they can use to decode multisyllabic words. Teachers will need to supplement materials to teach vowel and consonant letter-sounds and combinations, as necessary.

Recommendation 2: Fluency Building

The Rewards materials partially align with this recommendation of the IES Practice Guide. The intervention demonstrated evidence of providing a purpose for each repeated reading. Teachers will need to supplement materials to regularly provide opportunities for students to read a wide range of texts and to focus some instructional time on reading with prosody.
