Our partners in Massachusetts are focused on improving practice in literacy instruction in Grades K–3 as a mechanism for addressing declining reading scores and consistent gaps in academic achievement for students from low-income households, students of color, and other historically disadvantaged student groups. Lack of alignment between current literacy instructional practices and evidence-based practices may be contributing to declining reading scores and literacy achievement gaps. The Region 1 team is supporting Massachusetts’s efforts to strengthen the fundamental building blocks of educational success through growing a cohort of district staff, educators, literacy coaches, and school leaders with expertise in identifying and implementing evidence-based early literacy strategies. Projects include the following:
